Abstract

Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease that can cause changes in the Hematological profile, particularly in hemoglobin, erythrocyte, leukocyte, platelet, and hematocrit levels. These changes may reflect the patient's inflammatory condition and health status and have implications for the health aspects of prospective blood donors. However, studies linking the Hematological profile in pulmonary TB to blood donor eligibility remain limited. The aim of this study analyzes the Hematological profile in patients with pulmonary TB and identify its implications for blood donor eligibility as well as existing research gaps. This study used a Narrative Literature Review. Literature available in the existing extraction document was reviewed narratively, focusing on pulmonary tuberculosis, hematological profile changes, and their relevance to blood donor eligibility. The literature comprised Indonesian- and English-language publications, mainly from 2021–2026, from sources recorded in the extraction document: PubMed/MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, Garuda, and SINTA. This review did not use a systematic PRISMA selection process. The literature indicates that pulmonary TB is generally associated with decreased hemoglobin, erythrocyte, and hematocrit levels, as well as increased leukocyte, platelet, and Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR). Anemia is the most consistent finding and represents the Hematological parameter most relevant to donor eligibility. Evidence regarding donor eligibility for individuals with a history of cured TB remains limited.Changes in the Hematological profile in pulmonary TB, particularly anemia, should be considered in the health evaluation of prospective blood donors. A history of TB cannot be directly used as a basis for donor ineligibility without considering cure status and current health conditions at the time of donation.
