Inhibitory activity of Solanum lycopersicum L. folium against Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus

Abstract

Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus was known corelated to incidentals of acnes. Antibiotics treatment has been reported to cause many cases of antibiotics resistance and kidney damage. One of the plants that is rich of secondary metabolites and has the potential to be used for skin inflammation, reducing pain and anti-inflammatory including acne is tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). This study focuses on the use of tomato leaves to determine the active compounds providing antibacterial activity against P.acnes and S.aureus using diffusion method and TLC-bioautography approach. The results showed that tomato leaves extract has inhibitory activity towards P.acnes ATCC 6919 with inhibition zones at concentrations of 50%; 25%; 12,5% and 6,25% respectively of 21,33 ± 1,89; 11,16 ± 3,05; 6 ± 0,5 and 4 ±0,5. Towards S,aureus ATCC 25923 at the same concentration series, inhibition zone data were obtained at 20,17 ± 2,84; 14,5 ± 2,17; 12,17 ± 4,53 and 5,17 ± 0,57. Through the TLC-bioautography approach, the inhibitory activity against P.acnes ATCC6919 and S. aureus ATCC 25923  was confirmed correlated to the presence of phenolics and flavonoids.
