Adequate knowledge about how to administer medication is an important factor in the success of therapy. Low health literacy among the public can hinder patients' understanding of the proper use of medication. Leaflets are considered a practical and efficient written educational medium that can convey information clearly. This study aims to determine the effect of education on the proper administration of medication through leaflets on the level of knowledge of customers at the YAKRI Clinic in North Bekasi.
This study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest design. A sample of 78 respondents was selected using accidental sampling from a population of 83 customers who met the inclusion criteria. Knowledge levels were measured twice using a validated questionnaire containing 16 questions, namely before (pretest) and after (posttest) the distribution of the leaflet. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk normality tests showed that the data were not normally distributed (p < 0.05), so the analysis was continued with the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test.
The Wilcoxon test results showed an Asymp. Sig (2-tailed) value of 0.000 (< 0.05), indicating a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores. A total of 92.3% of respondents experienced an increase in knowledge, 5.1% experienced no change, and 2.6% experienced a decrease. The distribution of knowledge categories shifted positively, with the “good” category increasing from 0% to 24.36%, the ‘adequate’ category from 26.92% to 52.56%, and the “poor” category decreasing from 73.08% to 23.08%. The highest increase occurred in the indicator of drug dosage forms and administration procedures (71.15%), while the lowest increase was in the indicator of drug definitions (55.1%). Providing education through leaflets effectively increased the knowledge of YAKRI Bekasi Utara Clinic customers regarding proper and correct drug administration. Leaflets are suitable for use as a routine educational medium in healthcare facilities to improve drug literacy.
